GP Services in Westport

The Westport Medical Clinic provides a range of general medical services:

We offer GP and nurse consultations for recent onset and longer term medical complaints including blood testing, urine testing for infection, urine drug screening, warfarin monitoring (INR), venesection (removal of blood) for haemochromatosis.

We also offer the following range of services:

Diagnostic Ultrasound

This type of scan is useful for looking at liver, gallbladder, kidneys, bladder, womb, ovaries, soft tissue swellings/skin lumps, and for assessing pregnancies. Consultation with doctor is required before an ultrasound can be scheduled to make sure it is the right investigation for you.

Joint Injection

Injection of steroid or viscosupplement (lubricant) for relief of painful or restricted joints (knee, shoulder, elbow etc), or tendons (wrist, foot etc). Consultation with doctor is required to assess your complaint prior to deciding on whether an injection might be of benefit.

Cardiac Exercise Testing

This looks at your heart’s performance while you exercise (exercise bike is used).

Skin Surgery

Removal of moles, skin tags, and skin lesions, ingrown toenail removal, incision and drainage of abscesses, stitching, nasal cautery for recurrent nosebleeds.

Women’s Health Services

Mirena/Jaydess/Kyleena coils and copper coil insertions, contraceptive implant, injectable/depot contraception, and prescription for pills, patches and rings; cervical smear and HPV testing; pregnancy care; menopause care including HRT and alternatives; unplanned pregnancy counselling and advice with onward referral if needed.

STI Screening

Swabs for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea; and bloods for HIV, hepatitis and syphilis if required. Note that blood testing for HIV and hepatitis is best performed 12 weeks after high-risk sex as it takes this long for infection to become obvious in the blood. Women’s and men’s health checks including blood tests, ECG (heart testing), blood pressure check, breast/prostate examination as required.

Vaccinations

Full standard childhood vaccinations available as per the HSE schedule; travel vaccines tailored to your requirements- please see our nurses in plenty of time as courses can take up to 6 months to complete! ; seasonal flu vaccine from late September/early October; pertussis vaccine in pregnancy; Hepatitis B vaccination for health care workers.

Personal Wellness Profile Health Screening

Including hearing test, lung function test, body fat measurement, full bloods including cholesterol and diabetes testing, cardiac exercise testing, and ultrasound scanning of the abdomen to assess liver/gallbladder/kidneys.

Hearing Tests

Full audiometry in a booth to identify any hearing loss.

Lung Function Tests

To assess for asthma or COPD (smoking-related lung disease).

Driving licence medicals

To assess eyesight and fitness to drive- note there is a fee for this service for both private and medical card patients.

Medical Certification

General illness, sports fitness, return to work, Marine (ENG 11), Diving (HSA certified).

Medico-Legal Assessments

Includes assessment of fitness to make a will and/or assign enduring power of attorney, and medico-legal reports following injury/accident. These medicals are generally requested of us by your solicitor.
